The Reef Guardian Schools program educates students and the school community about the connection between our everyday actions and the health of the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef Guardian program inspires students and their families to make a positive difference.

"As an active participant in the Reef Guardians program for the past seven years, Townsville Central State School has undertaken a range of projects to help protect the environment and the Great Barrier Reef" according to Carolyn Luder of Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). Recent initiatives include the introduction of Sustainability Captain - a student leadership position, litter-free Fridays and Tidy Turtle. Tidy Turtle will be rotated through classrooms on a weekly basis, inspiring each class to take the lead with environmental actions and reminding them to share the care of our marine ecosystems.

"The Reef Guardian Schools program is a voluntary stewardship program encouraging understanding and awareness of the Reef and its connected ecosystems."

Over 110,000 students in Reef Guardian Schools across Queensland are participating in various environmental initiatives to improve waste, water and energy management and increase biodiversity.

Projects include tree planting, recycling programs, native habitat regeneration and solar energy installations.

The Reef Guardian Schools program is an environmental education program run by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
