Townsville Central students participate in a range of sports - representing the school and in clubs, teams and activities independent of the school.
Students compete in inter-house swimming, cross country and track & field carnivals. The two sports houses are Pandora and Yongala, named after ships that have historical significance to North Queensland.
Swimming - our students participate in weekly lessons and an interhouse swimming carnival during term one.
Students are then selected to represent the school at a Townsville School Sport inter-school swimming carnival. Schools are ranked on a promotion and relegation system - in 2014 Townsville Central won the D schools carnival so were promoted to C schools for 2015 which they duly won. In 2016, Townsville Central will compete in the B schools carnival. Four trophies are presented - 1st overall, 2nd overall, average and most improved.
Cross country - interhouse cross country is held in late term 1 or early term 2 each year. Selected students then go on to compete at the inter-school cross country at Bi-centennial Park.
Track & field - the interhouse athletics carnival is held over two days in late term 2 or early term 3. Selected students then compete at a Townsville School Sport inter-school track & field carnival in August - students refer to this carnival as 'Red Track' as it is held at the Townsville Sports Reserve. Schools are ranked each year according to school population - Townsville Central has consistently competed in the D schools carnival in recent years.
Records for track and field events have been kept since 2009 (field) and 2012 (track). In 2013 age champions were introduced.
